In many places nowadays you come across an emergency exit sign. But do you know how important they are and where they are obligatory? We would like to explain a little bit more about that. The signs are intended to indicate emergency doors and escape routes. The escape route signs are there to indicate the direction of the escape routes. They also mark the escape doors, so people can immediately bring themselves to safety, for example in an evacuation. An emergency exit sign is therefore necessary for each company and for many buildings. There can always be a fire or people can suddenly leave the building for any other reason. It must then be quickly clear which route they must take and this must be visible in both light and dark. 

Emergency exit lighting, necessary?

There are several emergency exit signs that are photoluminescent. This means that they continue to light up, this will happen when the are irradiated by a light source. It has the advantage that the emergency exit signs do not depend on mains voltage. But it is important that these signs are illuminated by light. If this is not the case then glow in the dark is not activated. If the mains voltage is dropped then the emergency exit signs will continue to light up for some time.

How long the after lighting is, depends on the light intensity but also on the light source. This can be different each time, but it is important to keep an eye on it. The emergency exit lighting is lighting at an emergency exit sign. Even in the dark, people should be able to escape when something is going on. There must be thought of everyone's safety and that is only possible if everything meets all the guidelines of the law.  

Emergency exit pictogram 

Most people are familiar with an emergency exit pictogram. But do you know where the emergency exit signs are obligatory? They must be present in the facade, for example, but also in the interior doors of an escape route. Escape route signs must also be present at height differences, as well as at junctions from one side to the other and at passages. Every company has to comply with all guidelines, this can also be checked.

It is important that everyone can be brought to safety quickly if there is something going on inside a building. Usually this is also practiced at least once a year and then we can see if everything still meets the requirements and is clearly visible. Also for staff it is important to practice so they also know the escape route and emergency exit lighting recognize. An emergency exit sign is in most places directly visible and people often recognize it immediately. It is important that they know the escape routes and therefore there are exercises for the employees in every company. This is often at least once a year and sometimes more often. It also depends on the size of the company and usually has different rules for each sector.
